Re: Replacing Sensor In Six Easy Steps
Thanks lads for all this, it really helped but now I have another problem... After placing an order on Panasonic page I realized that I cannot order from Europe since this
store is in the U.S. while I'm in Ireland! There is no feckin E.U. store whatever I type in google, H.E.L.P!

I have finally found the right site after writing to Panasonic support EU!
For those living in the EU this is the site where you can order spare parts
, and this is what the parts are named there:
RMQ1224-SENSOR SHEET, REP3600AJ-S-SENSOR PC BOARD ASSY
One more time a big thank you to everybody here, especially to Tigersharc and Maladjusted!
Now I'm just waiting for this to arrive.... Hopefully I'll be able to replace all this meself.

Re: Replacing Sensor In Six Easy Steps
yeah really easy (although slightly frustrating) to replace yourself...make sure u download the service manual & follow the instructions EXACTLY.
ive opened mine quite a few times now. The main difficulty is getting the brass washer/nut (you'll know what i mean when you come to it) around
the cables...can be tricky! be careful & be patient! damaging a cable could be a nightmare!!
I mite even post a vid on the disassembley when I get the time...

Thanks to Funnel for this information.
If your DZ is giving a distorted sound like a badly warped record - but sounds fine in CD mode, then the odds are that its sensor needs replacement. This has happened to a few DZ owners (including me) - can be sorted under warranty (took 3 months in my case) but if you can't wait, or your DZ is out of warranty, here's a step-by-step guide to help you.
1. Shouldn't have to tell you this - but disconnect from mains first. Then flick out the little grey plugs from the LCD hub, and undo the Phillips screws beneath.
2. Lift up the LCD hub. The sensor, its PCB, and a bracket holding it in place (which has an earth connection for the LCD hub) are at 3 o' clock.
3. Tease out the ribbon cable from the sensor panel plate.
4. Pull the IDC connector from the LCD hub, preferably using tweezers. The LCD hub can now be taken off completely leaving you with room to get at the sensor.
5. Pull the IDC connector from the sensor PCB.
6. Now unscrew the earth plate bracket and the sensor PCB from the sensor panel plate.
7. Voila! Here's the little fella, face on, attached to its PCB. The sensor's the black bit; seen side-on (haven't shown this view here) it's 'C'-shaped with a groove in the middle, and it's only about a centimetre tall.
How does the sensor work? Well the DZ's slip plate assembly includes a transparent plastic ring etched with radial markings, attached underneath the platter. As the platter spins the ring's inner edge passes through the groove in the sensor, the markings interrupt the sensor's laser beam and this tells the unit exactly how fast the platter is moving; a microcomputer adjusts the sound accordingly. No wonder everything goes to shit when the sensor doesn't work properly. You can get a new one
here
; I think the part number is REP3600AJ-S.
Thanks for the info, on this problem. I was racking my brain trying to figure out what the heck was going on.

Re: Replacing Sensor In Six Easy Steps
When I got my repair done the sensor and disk were only a total of $30. That is not including the labor to repair/replace it though.

Re: Replacing Sensor In Six Easy Steps
I actually took mine out and adjusted the sensor a bit. The clear disc was apparently rubbing just slightly on the sensor assembly. Now everything seems to be fine now.

Re: Replacing Sensor In Six Easy Steps
Sounds good. By chance how many hours after your repair did you play on them to ensure you had no further issues?

Now I'm just waiting for this to arrive.... Hopefully I'll be able to replace all this meself.
I have to admit that this website offer very expensive spare parts compared to the Panasonic.com support webiste in the States.
There is no an official European Panasonic support website?
Cheers

Update: I'm sorry but this website for panasonic spare parts only ship to the UK. Yesteraday I have placed an order and they refunded me. Anyone know the EU distributor for Panasonic spare parts?
Cheer,

( I posted this earlier...)
I noticed this seller on Ebay that deals exclusively in technics parts and ships worldwide, if they don't have it I'm sure they could order it for you!

Thank you SenseiHaus for your suggestion, I will try to catch the guy and ask him about that.
However, it's quite embarassing that Panasonic USA only ship to the states and there is no way to order parts directly from their website worldwide. And I'm not just talking about dz-1200 but every Technics or Panasonic product.
Very disappointed!
Cheers,
